In an effort to further create an English-learning atmosphere in our school, enrich our students’ extracurricular cultural life, and show the spirit of contemporary college students, the English Public Speaking Contest with the topic on “KnowledgeSpeaks, but Wisdom Listens” was co-hosted by the School of International Business of our school and the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of our school, in the academic lecture hall at 19:00 on May 19, 2021. This contest was also the First International Image Ambassador Selection Competition and the Awarding Ceremony of Multi-language Calligraphy Competition
Present at the contest were Shen Min, vice principal of our school, Shi Zhuanzhuan, director of the International Cooperation and Exchanges Office of our school, Tang Chuanchuan, minister of the Student Work Department of our school, Liu Li, dean of the School of International Business of our school, Chen Ping, deputy secretary of the CPC general branch of the School of International Business of our school, Gan XueMei, deputy secretary of the CPC general branch of the School of New Media Art of our school, Yao Zhuanhua, secretary of the CPC general branch of the School of Accounting of our school, and directors of all student organizations of our school, as well as all consellors. The judges of this contest were five full-time English teachers including Ms. Luo Nanying, Ms. Li Xue, Ms. Li Xingling, Ms. Wang Hui and Ms. Wang Mengsha.
The competition kicked off with an energetic dance to the song “Genda Phool” by our school’s hip-hop club. A total of 10 contestants, winners of the preliminary round and the second round of our school, took turns to give their wonderful speech, winning many applauses from the teachers and students. The final competition held at the school level consists of three parts: 3-minute prepared speech, 2-minute impromptu speech and 2-minute on-site questions, with an aim to test these contestants’ English skills, improvisation ability and adaptability.
At the end of the competition, judge Li Xue commented on the contestants’ performance, “From this competition, we can see that the contestants have made full preparation in both the prepared speech section and the impromptu speech section. Their speech either quoted from classics or linked with current hot topics, and that conveyed their personal understanding of the meaning of knowledge and wisdom to the audience, and at the same time, they made in-depth interpretation to arouse the resonance of the audience. Overall, they all performed well.” Shi Zhuanzhuan, director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of our school, concluded, “Life is short. What is difficult is not to learn, but to keep learning. The set phrase “Learning is endless” is a very good phrase, as English has become the most widely used language in various fields of human life in today’ssociety. It is hoped that everyone here can keep learning English while in college, and play an active role in “alumni effect”, telling the story of our school, and making our voice heard by the world.” Then she announced that Lin Zhen won the grand prize of the competition with his standard pronunciation, intonation and fluent oral English, and he became the first “International Image Ambassador”of our school.
The competition made our students deeply understand the unique charm of English as a bridge of cultural communication, and also made them realize the profound significance of telling the story of our school as a member of the big family.
